Get Up and Thank God

“At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgement.” Psalm 119:62

Most of us have trouble rising in the morning to give thanks to God. We do not even think of raising at midnight to thank God. Should we be rising at midnight?

The first word in this verse is חצות (chatzot) which means middle. This word is connected with the next one לילה (layelah) which means night. In the middle of the night, that is midnight.

אקום (akum) means arise, stand up. In this verse it carries the meaning of arising after lying done, in other words, getting up. להודות (lihodot) begins with a ל (lamed) which means to. The main word means give thanks, laud, praise. The word לך (lache) is a preposition meaning you, to you, or for you. The you referred to here is God.  The Psalmist arises to give God thanks.

The word על (al) is a conjunction meaning because. It is denoting a reason, this is why the Psalmist gives God thanks. משפטי (mishiphity) is judgements, ordinances. These are what God has decreed that we should do. The final word in this verse is צדקך (tzidekecha) which means thy righteousness. God truly is righteous as are all His judgements. We should be eager to do God’s judgements since they are righteous.

The Psalmist states that he rises in the middle of the night to thank God because of His righteous judgements. The Psalmist must think a lot of God’s judgements and God if he is willing to give up sleep just to thank God for them. We should be just as thankful for God’s judgements and think as much of the Master. We should thank God for His righteous judgements when we wake during the night. We should be thinking of them at all times. We should get up early to praise the Lord and spend time with Him. You will find rest in the Lord as you seek Him, rest that is better than physical rest. Be thankful to God for His righteous judgements and blessings to us. Spend time with Him when you wake up and wake up earlier if you need to in order to have that time. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.
